Phillip B. Thomason is a Professor of Spanish and Chairperson of the International Studies and Languages Division at Pepperdine University. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Montevallo in Spanish and Political Science, a Master of Hispanic Studies degree from Auburn University and the Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Kentucky. His primary research was done in the Archivo Municipal de Madrid. Dr. Thomason teaches all levels of Spanish, but most recently his teaching assignments have been in upper division language, literature and civilization. Working with International Programs since 1988, Dr. Thomason has served as director of the Spanish Intensive Language Program in Madrid and resident director of the Latin America pilot programs (Costa Rica, Argentina and Spain).He has been on the Modern Language faculty at Pepperdine University since 1986 and served for 14 years as Coordinator of Languages until Spring of 2006. He was named Chair of the Division in August of 2007. His major area of research is El Coliseo de la Cruz: Madrid's First Permanent Theater (1737-1859) for which he received a fellowship from the Ministry of Culture of Spain. His book on the subject has is available from Tamesis Books. Dr. Thomason’s most recent book was published in the the Fall of 2006 (Thomason, Phillip B. and Byrne, Ceri. The Eighteenth Century Theatre in Spain, A Bibliography of Criticism and Documentation, Glasgow: University Press, 2005, pp. 210). Current research includes the Poetry of Rita Geada and Teaching Culture and Civilization in overseas settings. Dr. Thomason lives in Port Hueneme with his wife, Cathy. Their son, Brian also works at Pepperdine University as the University Controller. Aside from spending time with his family, his pastimes include running (completed San Francisco, Catalina, LA and Madrid marathons), reading, seeing films, and gardening.
